If you want to be successful in making
money on the internet, you will need to know how to select and
register domain names quickly and inexpensively so you don’t miss
out on time sensitive opportunities. You will register dozens,
maybe even hundreds of domain names over the life of your business.
Before we talk about registering your
Business Name, lets talk about some domain names you might want to
get right off the bat.
When registering domain names, remember
to think about these possibilities…

As you’re selecting
the products, services, or programs you want to market on your site,
remember that you want to stick with a common theme for your entire
site. If you have products that fall under two or three different
themes, you might consider developing separate sites for each
theme. Each theme will require the registration of a different
domain name.
How do you determine if
your
business
will fit under one or multiple
themes?
If you wanted to
develop a site for selling information about financial planning, you
could sell books and information about stock market investing,
mutual funds, savings bonds, and tax saving strategies. However, you
would not want to include anything about your Alaskan Wilderness
tour guide business. That is a separate site altogether. You might
mention your interest in guide business in your personal profile and
create a link to your tour guide site from your profile, but this
would be the extent of your promotion of that business on your
financial site.
If you’re doing information marketing, network marketing, and
affiliate programs, this can all be under the topic of “business
opportunities” or “making money on the net.” But if your network
marketing company sold nutritional products or skin care products,
you would probably want to develop or link to another site to
promote or sell these products online.
Your main site name
Once you’ve decided
on your website theme, its time to register your main website name,
often called a URL or domain name. This is no light matter since
this name will follow you and your business for the rest of your
life and may be willed to your grandchildren. So choose your name
carefully.
There
are a few common strategies for selecting a domain name for your
main business website. First, you may consider registering your full
name as your main business domain name. Some people develop their
entire business around their name or a variation of their name.

Most people opt for registering an "easy to remember" business name
that relates to their site theme. This could be an existing
business name, trade name, or a new name you make up.

Finding a
New Domain Name
One of the best
ways to pick fantastic domain names is to take pen and paper and
list as many keywords as you can that are related to your website
theme. These keywords can be single words or combinations of words.
Using a thesaurus can also be helpful in finding several more
potential domain words that might be synonyms to one of your
keywords.
Review all of the single keywords and combinations of keywords that
make sense and have a nice ring. Shorter domains tend to be easier
to remember and manage, but it is not absolutely critical to have a
short name.
Make your list
Here’s what you do
next. Open a file in your word processor and make a list of your
domain names vertically on the page. Separate each new domain name
idea with an a hard return (which means pressing the ENTER key in
between each different name). Don’t put the www before the domain,
just start with the name of the site, like…
“networkmarketingonthenet.com” (without the quotes).
.com .net and .org
Be sure to search
for the .com .net and .org versions of the domain since you may
want to register these for other uses OR to simply keep you
competition from copying you. Another reason for registering the
.com .net and .org is that if you choose to SELL the domain down the
road, you can make a much sweeter deal selling ALL THREE as a
package than just the one name.
By the way, just
for your information, .com stands for “commercial”, .net stands for
“internet”, and .org stands for “organization”. The .orgs are
thought of, in most cases, as Non-Profit organizations, although
they don’t have to be. There are many .orgs on the net that are For
Profit and that is totally legitimate.
Now, let me get back to
the .com .net and the .org domains and show you how to do the MASTER
DOMAIN SEARCH LIST. Here’s an example of what I’m talking about.
SPECIAL TIP: Registering a Domain Name can be a FANTASTIC
BIRTHDAY PRESENT, CHRISTMAS PRESENT, or WEDDING PRESENT for a family
or individual. Keep that in mind the next time you're looking for a
unique gift for the person who has everything.
See how I made a list of all my families names? YOU
don't have to register these names yourself, just check on them for
your family members and let them know they are available. Then tell
them they can register their own names for $19.95 at
Remember,
even if you are not going to use a website name immediately, if its
a good name, register it now and sell it later for profit (or use it
later for a site). I've sold domain names for as much as $1,000 -
$2,000. I have friends who have earned $50,000 -$80,000 on one
domain name that they purchased for around $20.
Standard Registration Costs
The standard price for registering
websites is $70 to register one domain name for 2 years and $35 per
year per domain for every year after. You can not register your

Protecting Your Name
If you discover a REALLY great domain name, you might consider
registering your domain as a Trademark so others can’t try to take
your domain name away from you. How do you do this? Just go to any
search engine and put in the term “trademark registration” and do a
search and you will find many resources to choose from. It can cost
several hundred dollars to register a trade name (and possibly a few
thousand if you go through an attorney).
Making Money With Domain Names
Substantial profit potential is one of the reasons that people tend
to register extra domain names. Anyone can buy and sell domains and
some have even turned this into a full-time business. If you have a
knack for finding high demand domain names, you could fetch
hundreds, thousands, even tens of thousands of dollars for just one
good name. Hot domain names can also give you excellent bartering
power. You might trade a great domain name for something of equal or
greater value to you. Domains can also be given, willed, or even
sold to someone else.
Are all of the good
ones taken?
When searching for
your own name or your business website name, you might become

Have you ever seen someone’s domain name and said to yourself…
THAT’S the one I WANTED!! DARN IT!! Don’t worry, I’ve felt the same
way. No matter when you get interested in the internet, there was
always someone who got interested before you and took advantage of
it.
Don’t be afraid to
contact the owner of that registered domain name to see if they are
willing to sell or trade the domain name you really want. I’ve had
quotes that I turned down for a much as $60,000 and quotes that I
have taken for several hundred to several thousand dollars. To
